A half brother of Mary Queen of Scots, Earl of Moray, James Stuart who was regent during his sisters incarceration then abdication has been reputed to be the first regent or head of state to be assassinated by a fire arm. After much controversy including delivering papers known as the casket papers that accused his sister of a plot against the Queen of England he returned to Scotland triumphant only to be shot in the Main Street of Linlithgow from a house window by a 16th century carbine.
